DIY Sunburn Spray to cool skin with peppermint, lavender, and frankincense essential oils

Use this After Sun Spray as soon as possible after being in the sun to cool the temperature of your skin. Reapply every few hours or as desired for soothing relief.   You should see and feel a noticeable improvement in your skin the next day.

How and Why does After-Sun Spray Work?

The ingredients in this all natural homemade cooling spray are all designed to soothe, cool, and help your skin heal. What is so powerful about it?

Well, for starters there are no chemicals that can harm the skin and make your red skin even worse.  Many ingredients in store bought sprays have synthetic chemicals and preservatives in them that may temporarily make your skin feel better, but in the end can dry your skin out and ultimately cause more harm than good.

These ingredients also can cause all kinds of other problems, typically with hormones.  I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to mess with any other body system, especially when I am trying to heal skin.  This spray focuses on just that and has no ingredients in it that will disrupt hormones or do anything else .  Just pure, natural healing benefits.

This DIY blend contains healing coconut oil, vitamin E, and what I consider to be the two most important ingredients:  aloe vera and essential oils.

Aloe Vera is beneficial for skin

Aloe Vera is hugely beneficial for skin, which is why it’s included in this spray.   Studies show evidence that aloe vera is effective in healing first- to second-degree skin irritations.

When looking for Aloe Vera, you want to make sure you use one that is as close to 100% aloe vera as possible.  You’ll never be able to find 100% because there will always be something added to preserve it and keep it from going bad.

Look at the ingredients, and, in general, the shorter the list the better.  If there is a huge long list of names you can’t pronounce, move on.   This holds true for any product or food item.  I’m a huge label reader!  If I don’t know what’s in something, I don’t want it on or in my body.

Use Aloe Vera Juice not Gel

This cooling after sun spray recipe calls forAloe Vera Juice.  Yep, the kind we drink.    I do not recommend substituting aloe vera gel for this because it’s too thick and won’t spray well.    I’ve done it more than once in a pinch.

Essential Oils to Use in Your DIY Sunburn Spray

The essential oils in the spray will help cool the temperature of your skin and start the healing process.  Here’s a breakdown by essential oil of each essential oil’s benefits and why it’s included in this sun spray:

Peppermitn essential oil can soothe and cool a sunburn
  • Lavender essential oil is soothing and healing for red irritated skin. It is one of the most beneficial essential oils for skin!  It has a wide variety of skin care uses.  You’ll find it in many of my DIY skin care recipes, including this popular Facial Serum DIY and After-Shave Serum
  • Peppermint essential oil is cooling.  .
  • Frankincense essential oil  has chemical properties that make it and amazing powerhouse for cellular regeneration, and inflammation.  I include it in most of my DIY skin care recipes because of it’s healing benefits.

Supplies you’ll need for you sunburn spray

First, you’ll need a spray bottle.

I’m obsessed with these continuous fine mist sprayers. You may have seen your hairdresser use one of these on your hair.  I’ve been using them for lots of different sprays lately, and I especially love them for this soothing spray.

It sprays continuously while holding the trigger which works fabulously when you’re trying to spray those hard to reach places like your back.

You can pick up this 2 pack of cute doTERRA brand continuous mist sprayer right here from my doTERRA Certified Shop.

Or you can pick one up from Amazon. This one is highly rated and comes in a variety of colors and is made of PET plastic, which is safe for use with essential oils.

Other Ingredients for your After Sun Spray

Aloe Vera Juice

You want to get Aloe Vera JUICE, not GEL for this. The gel is too thick for the spray. I like THIS ONE

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E Oil can help fight free radicals and environmental damage to your skin. It provides intense nourishment to your skin to help reduce damage. It’s a great addition to your after skin spray.

I really like THIS ONE. I use this brand for many different carrier oils and natural ingredients.

Jojoba Oil (or Fractionated Coconut Oil)

You’ll need a carrier oil. This could be your favorite carrier oil but I personally like to use Jojoba Oil for this because it is the oil that is closest to our skin’s natural oil.

Feel free to use Fractionated Coconut Oil, Argan Oil, Almond Oil, even olive oil. Whatever your skin likes the best is perfect.

This is the Jojoba Oil that I love to use:
