What is a magnesium spray
A magnesium spray is a topical solution that contains magnesium chloride. It is used to supplement magnesium levels in the body through absorption via the skin.
A magnesium spray is a convenient way to increase your magnesium levels. By applying the solution to your skin, your body can absorb the magnesium chloride. This method bypasses the digestive system, allowing for faster absorption.
Many people use magnesium sprays to support muscle relaxation, promote better sleep, and alleviate cramps. Simply spray it onto the desired area and gently massage it in for optimal absorption.

why is magnesium important in our body
Magnesium is important for our body because it plays a crucial role in various biological processes, such as muscle and nerve function, energy production, protein synthesis, and maintenance of strong bones.
Magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in our bodies, making it a vital nutrient for overall health and well-being.
It helps regulate blood sugar levels, supports the immune system, maintains normal nerve function, and promotes a healthy heartbeat.
Magnesium also plays a crucial role in the structural development of bones and may even help reduce the risk of migraines.
What happens when we have a magnesium deficiency
Magnesium deficiency has been linked to various health issues, including cardiovascular disease, muscle cramps, high blood pressure and impaired muscle function.
This mineral is essential for the proper functioning of our muscles and nerves. It helps relax muscles, preventing spasms and muscle cramps.
This Healthline article discusses many of the benefits and uses of Magnesium in our body..
Magnesium also plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy heartbeat, as it regulates the electrical impulses that control our heart rhythm.
In addition to its role in muscle function, magnesium is important for overall health. It contributes to bone health, as it helps with the absorption of calcium, another essential mineral for strong bones. Adequate magnesium intake has also been associated with a reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes and improved blood sugar control.
Did you know that magnesium is also essential for our digestive system? It helps regulate muscle contractions in the digestive tract, promoting healthy bowel movements and preventing constipation.
Magnesium is involved in the production of energy at a cellular level, where it plays a key role in ATP synthesis, the energy currency of our cells. This mineral is also important for the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and proteins, supporting proper cell function and growth.
Magnesium deficiency can be caused by various factors such as inadequate dietary intake, certain medical conditions, excessive alcohol consumption, and certain medications.
Why use a Magnesium Spray vs. an Oral Supplement
Many people use magnesium supplements to promote relaxation and improve sleep quality. However, oral supplements may not always be the most effective way to increase magnesium levels, as the body’s absorption of magnesium through the digestive system can be limited.
This is where transdermal magnesium therapy comes in. Transdermal absorption, or topical application for absorption through the skin, offers a more efficient way of delivering magnesium to the body. By applying magnesium oil spray topically, you can bypass the digestive system and directly deliver magnesium to your cells, muscles, and tissues.
When you spray magnesium oil onto your skin, it bypasses the digestive system, ensuring that the magnesium is not affected by factors such as stomach acid or enzymes.
This means that a higher percentage of magnesium is available for the body to utilize, compared to oral supplements where some of the magnesium may be lost during the digestion process.

Prepping to make your DIY Magnesium Spray
Before you begin, gather all your supplies so you have them ready to go.
You’ll need Magnesium Flakes, Distilled Water, and a spray bottle.
You can also add essential oils to your spray if you like for added calming benefits and a fabulous scent.
Choosing the Right Type of Magnesium Flakes
It’s essential to choose the right type of magnesium chloride flakes. While there are various forms of magnesium available, not all of them are suitable for transdermal use.
One of the most popular choices for magnesium spray is magnesium chloride flakes. These flakes offer high bioavailability, meaning they are easily absorbed through the skin and efficiently utilized by the body.
Other forms of magnesium, such as epsom salt (magnesium sulfate), may not be as effective for topical use. While epsom salts can be beneficial for relaxing baths, it may not provide the same level of transdermal absorption as magnesium chloride flakes.
When selecting magnesium chloride flakes, ensure that they are of high quality and suitable for transdermal use. High-quality flakes will have a higher magnesium content, ensuring that your homemade spray delivers the intended benefits.
These are the Magnesium Chloride Flakes I used for this DIY Recipe.
- Mindful Magnesium Soak for Daily Wind-Downs – A clean, water-soluble form of magnesium chloride designed to complement warm baths or foot soaks—no added fragrance or fillers.
Continuous Spray Bottle
I like to use a continuous spray bottle like this one. It is very efficient at applying over a large are (for example, spraying my legs before going to bed).
The exact bottle I used is no longer available on Amazon, however this is one identical to what I used, and rated #1 on Amazon for continuous spray bottes:
You may also choose to use a glass spray bottle like the one shown here: (you’ll likely need to use multiple bottles depending on the size bottle you buy as the recipe makes 16 oz.).
Step by Step Directions to Make Your Magnesium Spray
The first step is to boil the water. You can do this either on the stove in a pot of water, or in a glass jar in the microwave. It doesn’t really matter with method you choose.
Once the water is boiling, add your magnesium flakes to the boiling water and stir until they are dissolved.
Here is what it will look like once the magnesium has dissolved. Looks like plain water, right?!
Next, if you are going to add essential oils, add them to your carrier oil first. I used Jojoba oil here. Stir them into the carrier oil, then add that to the magnesium water.
Which essential oils are the best to use?
- If you’re looking to use this spray for better sleep, I recommend checking out my list of best essential oils for sleep and choosing something from that list.

Note: Sometimes, it takes some trial and error to find the essential oil that works best for you. So, if the first oil you try doesn’t work as well as you’d hoped, try again with something different. Each person’s body will react differently to specific essential oils. No one oil is the best fit for everyone.
The last step is to pour the mixture into your spray bottle. I recommend using a small funnel to make sure it all goes into the spray bottle instead of all over the counter.
