Ingredients and Supplies Needed to make Rose Tallow Face Cream
You only need 4 ingredients to make this Rose Tallow Face Cream:
- ½ cup rendered tallow
- dried Rose petals – use your own or buy some
- Carrier oil such as jojoba oil
- 10-15 drops essential oils (optional)
- 1 oz container
The first ingredient is Rendered Tallow. This is the one I like to use.
You’ll also need a carrier oil that is safe for your face. I used Jojoba Oil. Another good choice would be Argan Oil. I don’t recommend Coconut Oil since it is not non-comedogenic and can clog pores.
Dried Rose Petals – you’ll use these to make an infused oil with the carrier oil. Feel free to use some from your own garden. If you don’t have any readily available, you can pick up some dried rose petals from Mountain Rose Herbs or these on Amazon.
Essential Oil – I recommend using Rose Essential Oil. It can be pricey so feel free to use any essential oil you like. Some essential oils that are great for your face are:
- Frankincense
- Geranium (also known as “poor man’s rose” due to it being more affordable than Rose
- Lavender
- Roman Chamomile
Step by Step Directions for How to make Rose Tallow Face Cream
How to make a Rose Infused Oil (optional)
The first step is to make a Rose infused oil using dried rose petals and carrier oil such as jojoba oil.
If you prefer, you can skip infusing your carrier oil and simply use plain carrier oil. You’ll no longer have “rose tallow face cream”, though.
If you are going to skip infusing your carrier oil, I definitely recommend adding some essential oil to your face cream – particularly Rose Essential Oil!
However, both the infused oil and essential oil are completely optional. You can still make a great tallow face cream without the additions.
To do this, you’ll need a small jar that will hold at least 1/2 cup of carrier oil. I used a small mason jar.
Fill the jar with dried rose petals and then pour in your carrier oil to fill the jar.
Let this soak for several weeks – about 4 – 6 weeks. The longer it soaks, the more the carrier oil will soak up all the beneficial goodness from the rose petals.
Once you are done soaking the rose petals, strain them out and save the carrier oil. You’ll use this infused carrier oil to make your face cream.
Once you have your infused rose oil, it’s time to make the finished product – a rose face cream with tallow.
Make your Rose face cream with tallow
To make Tallow Face Cream, you’ll need rendered tallow, the infused rose oil (or plain carrier oil), and essential oil (optional).
You can leave out the essential oil and this will still turn out fantastic – so it’s totally up to you on that. I added a few extra drops of Rose essential oil to mine.
Add your rose infused oil or plain carrier oil and the tallow to either a double boiler or to a glass microwave safe container and heat until the mixture is melted.
If using the microwave, I recommend doing this in 30 second intervals and stirring in between.
Once your mixture is melted, let it cool slightly and then add in your essential oils. Use less or more depending on your personal preference.
That’s it! You can add it into any container and let it harden. Since no water was used, you won’t need a preservative.

I’m curious about the shelf life of this rose tallow cream. With natural products, I always worry they’ll go bad before I can use them up. Any tips on preserving it longer?
Adding a natural antioxidant like vitamin E can extend its shelf life. Always store in a cool, dark place!
Looks easy enough. Going to try it! Thanks
Has anyone here made this yet? I’m dying to know how it feels on the skin, especially compared to commercial moisturizers. I have super sensitive skin and am curious if this would be a good fit.
I love it on my skin. I used a combo of EOs and was very pleased.
Does anyone know if there’s a vegan alternative to tallow that works just as well in this recipe? Trying to keep it plant-based.
I absolutely love this idea! I’ve been growing roses in my garden for years and use them for everything from tea to decorations. Making a rose-infused oil for skincare seems like a perfect way to use them. I’m really looking forward to trying this out.
Fascinating article on incorporating rose in skincare. I’ve been infusing oils with different herbs for years but haven’t yet tried rose with tallow. Can you elaborate on the benefits of rose specifically for the skin? I’m always eager to learn more about the properties of natural ingredients.
Hey Dawn Goehring, I’m trying to switch my family over to more natural stuff and this rose tallow cream sounds interesting. Do you think it’s kid-friendly too, or should I stick to adults only for this one?
