Benefits of Zinc Oxide and Why Non-Nano is important
Zinc oxide provides numerous benefits in diaper rash creams and is very effective.
It forms a protective barrier on the skin, which helps prevent further irritation and moisture loss.
It has soothing properties that can alleviate discomfort and redness caused by diaper rash.
Zinc oxide has mild antiseptic properties, reducing the risk of infection in the affected area.
Using non-nano zinc oxide is crucial as it ensures that the particles are not small enough to be absorbed into the bloodstream.
Using Non Nano Zinc Oxide in your diaper rash cream is a safe and effective ingredient to help soothe, heal, and prevent further irritation.
Ingredients and Supplies You’ll Need To Make Diaper Rash Cream.

You’ll need 1 cup (8 oz) carrier oil such as Jojoba Oil, Avocado Oil, Argan Oil, etc. I used Avocado Oil.
The herbs are optional, but they do add some extra skin healing benefits. If you choose to use the herbs, you’ll need the following:
- Marshmallow Root
- Calendula
- Lavender
- Chamomile
To make the diaper rash cream, you’ll need the following ingredients:
Raw shea butter – this is the shea butter I use. You can use this shea butter in many DIY projects including diy natural sunscreen, or DIY Magnesium Cream for sore muscles, or Homemade Oatmeal Body Butter
Beeswax – Raw beeswax comes in many forms. It doesn’t matter which form you use. I tend to like these pellets simply because the pellets are easy to measure before melting. Beeswax can be used in many other DIY projects including Homemade Beeswax Candles , Natural Sunscreen and these Vanilla Lotion Bars
Non nano zinc oxide – Be sure to use a non-nano zinc oxide. This is the zinc I used.
Non-nano means the particles are not small enough to be absorbed into the blood stream.
Side note: Did you know that non-nano particles are important for toothpaste, also!?
Essential Oil – Essential oils are optional. If you are using with babies, be sure to follow safe practices and be cautious with the oils you use.
Babies skin is much more sensitive than adults so it’s best to use sparingly and be sure to use a high quality pure essential oil – absolutely no fragrance oil.
Recommended essential oils (use any or a combo):
- Lavender essential oil is fantastic for skin and highly recommended in this recipe.
- Tea Tree
- Frankincense – wonderful when combined with the other essential oils. Great for inflammation.
4 oz glass jar with lid – I used one of these baby safe glass jars. They come in a 12 pack and can be used for many things – including homemade baby food!.
- 12-Pack, Durable 4oz Food-grade Baby Food Containers – KeaBabies Prep Baby Bullet Containers check all the right boxes for a reliable baby food storage. They are great for busy parents to prepare and store homemade food safely and smoothly.
A small mason jar also works well if you happen to have one already on hand.
How to Make Diaper Rash Cream with Zinc Oxide
The first step is to make an herbal infused oil. This step can be skipped if you prefer not to use the herbs. The herbs give the cream more healing power but the cream will still be effective without it since the main healing ingredient is zinc.
To make the herbal infused oil (optional)

Gather your herbs and carrier oil and add each herb into a glass jar such as a mason jar. Pour the carrier oil into the jar and fill to the top. Place the lid on the jar and give it a gentle shake to mix everything up well.

Leave for 4 to 6 weeks, giving it a gentle shaking every couple of days. Then strain out the herbs keeping the oil. You can discard the herbs. (Tip: put them in your compost pile if you have one.)
This oil infusion is what you’ll use in the diaper rash cream in the next step.
How to make the diaper rash cream
The first step to making your diaper rash cream is to add the shea butter, infused oil (or plain carrier oil), and beeswax into a heat safe glass container.
Slowly melt it in a double broiler or in the microwave. If using the microwave, heat for 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between each heating. Repeat a few times until everything is melted and mixed together.

After the mixture is melted and mixed, put it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to solidify. I transferred my mixture to a small bowl for this, as you can see in the pic above, however it’s not necessary.
After the mixture has solidified in the fridge, mix it with a hand mixer or a stand mixer. It should look similar to this:

Then, mix in the non-nano zinc oxide.

The last step is to add your essential oils. Add in the drops and gently mix well.

Transfer the mixture to your glass storage jar and it’s now ready to use! Apply it just as you would any other diaper rash cream.
