Ingredients needed to make natural shaving cream
You’ll need a few basic ingredients to make this. Many of these ingredients can be used in other DIY recipes, so they aren’t just a one time purchase.
Shea Butter – You’ll want raw unrefined shea butter. Not the processed kind used as lotion. I buy this one
Coconut Oil – You’ll want to use one that is Organic, Virgin, Cold pressed. This is the one I buy.
Carrier Oil – I like to use this Organic Jojoba Oil since it doesn’t cause breakouts and is closest to the skin’s natural oil. You could also use Fractionated Coconut Oil, Almond Oil or Argan oil.
Essential Oils – You can use any scent for this so don’t feel like you have to use the oils I listed.
Here are the essential oils I used to make my men’s shaving cream and why:
- Tea Tree – beneficial for beard oil due to its natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help keep the skin under the beard clean and healthy.
- Peppermint – cooling to stop any burning feelings
- Sandalwood – Smells soooo good and masculine, and is a favorite of many many men!
If you are wanting to make a women’s shaving cream, you might choose to use more feminine essential oils (or perhaps not). Suggestions for women’s shaving cream:
- Tea Tree – I always recommend including this one for sure due it’s benefits (see above).
- Peppermint
- Lavender – amazing benefits for skin
- Chamomile
How to Make Shaving Cream
You’ll need either a double boiler or use a glass mason jar inside of a pot filled with water on the stovetop.
- Heat the water to simmering and add your ingredients to the double boiler or glass jar.
- Once everything is melted, stir well and remove from heat. I like to use a wooden craft stick for easy cleanup.
- Let it sit for about 3 minutes to cool just a bit, then add your essential oils and stir.
- Let it cool . You can pop it in the refrigerator if you want to speed up this step.
- Once it’s hardened and cooled completely, use a stand mixer or hand mixer to whip it until it’s light and fluffy.
- Store your shaving cream in an airtight glass jar – a mason jar works well.
