Ingredients Youโll Need for Your Lemon Balm Lip Balm
This recipe makes around 5 ounces of lip balm. Youโll need:
- Lemon balm
- Avocado oil (or any carrier oil of your choice)
- 6 tablespoons lemon balm infused oil (made with the lemon balm & avocado oil)
- 3 tablespoons beeswax
- 1 tablespoon cacao butter (shea butter works as a substitute)
- 20 drops (or more) essential oil. Suggestions:
- Lemon Balm (a.k.a. Melissa)
- or a combo of 10 drops tea tree and 10 drops peppermint
- or your favorite oil
- Lip balm containers or amber containers
Letโs explore how each ingredient contributes to the balm:
Lemon Balm
Lemon balm is one of my favorite ingredients to infuse into oils. Its soothing and healing properties make it the perfect base for this lip balm. The herbal infusion not only nourishes and protects your lips but also adds a delicate, natural scent that I really love. It creates a nutrient-rich foundation that gives the balm a touch of luxury.
- I like this brand for many of my dried herbs, including lemon balm.
- Mountain Rose Herbs is another great place to pick up your dried herbs like lemon balm.
Avocado Oil
Avocado oil is my go-to carrier oil for this recipe because of its deeply moisturizing properties and rich texture. It glides on smoothly and leaves my lips feeling hydrated without being greasy. You could also try using olive oil, grapeseed oil, MCT oil, or almond oil. Disclaimer: I haven’t made this balm with any of those, but there’s no reason they wouldn’t work.
Beeswax
Beeswax is a key ingredient in lip balm because it creates a natural protective barrier that locks in moisture while allowing the skin to breathe.
Its emollient properties help soothe and soften dry, chapped lips, making it ideal for year-round hydration.
Rich in vitamin A, beeswax also supports skin regeneration and healing, promoting smoother, healthier lips over time.
Its natural firmness gives homemade lip balms a smooth, stable texture without synthetic additives.
Cacao Butter
Cacao butter is what makes this balm feel extra special. Its creamy, luxurious texture helps the balm glide effortlessly across my lips. I love the subtle richness it adds, and it pairs beautifully with the beeswax to create a soft yet solid consistency. When Iโm out of cacao butter, I switch to shea butter, which gives a similar smoothness with a slightly softer feel.
Lemon Balm (Melissa), Tea Tree and Peppermint Essential Oils
These essential oils are the finishing touch that takes this balm to the next level. I like to use tea tree oil for its antibacterial propertiesโit gives me peace of mind knowing itโs helping to keep my lips healthy.
The peppermint oil adds a refreshing, cooling sensation that feels amazing, especially on dry or chapped lips. The subtle fragrance from these oils is invigorating without being overpowering, and it leaves my lips feeling rejuvenated after every use.
Each of these ingredients plays a crucial role in making the balm effective, nourishing, and enjoyable to use. I love how the balance of textures and scents comes together to create something that feels both practical and indulgent!
Step-by-Step Guide to Making Your Lemon Balm Lip Balm
Making this Lemon Balm Lip Balm is a simple and enjoyable process that lets you create a nourishing, natural product tailored to your needs. Follow these easy steps to craft your own lip balm at home!
Step 1: Create the Infused Oil
Add lemon balm to a glass jar, filling it partway. Pour avocado oil over the herb until it is fully covered. Let the mixture sit for a few weeks to allow the infusion process. Once ready, strain the oil to remove the lemon balm leaves.
Step 2: Melt the Ingredients
Combine the infused oil, cacao butter, and beeswax in a heat-safe glass container. Slowly melt the mixture using a double boiler or in the microwave, stirring in between to ensure everything blends evenly.
Step 3: Add the Essential Oils
Once the mixture is completely melted, add your essential oils.
It doesn’t matter what essential oils you use.
I recommend Lemon Balm (a.k.a. Melissa) to go with the dried lemon balm herbs. It is a fairly pricey oil so if that is out of your budget, the next best thing would be tea tree oil which offers similar benefits. You can learn more about the benefits of Lemon Balm / Melissa essential oil here.
You can go with all one essential oil – or a combo like Lemon Balm/Peppermint or Tea Tree/Peppermint.
Once you add your essential oils, stir thoroughly to distribute the oils throughout the balm.
Step 4: Pour and Set
You can pour the mixture into either lip balm tubes, or small pots. It doesn’t matter – go ahead and use whatever you prefer.
Here are the lip balm tubes I used.
Here are the amber pots I used.
Carefully pour the melted mixture into lip balm containers or amber jars. Let the balm sit until it hardens completely. Once solidified, itโs ready to use!
How to Use Your Lemon Balm Lip Balm
- Use a clean finger to scoop out a small amount or twist the lip balm container to bring the balm to the surface.
- Gently apply the balm to your lips, covering them completely.
- Use the balm throughout the day to keep your lips soft, smooth, and protected.
This is all!!! This Lemon Balm Lip Balm is a wonderful addition to your skincare routine and makes a thoughtful, handmade gift for friends or family. Enjoy crafting it and treating your lips to the nourishing care they deserve!
