Ingredients and Supplies You’ll Need To Make Your Sunscreen Spray
Before you get started, gather all of your supplies and ingredients.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your homemade sunscreen spray
The best Zinc to use
The best zinc to use for your homemade sunscreen is NON NANO ZINC OXIDE.
Non-Nano is important because this means the size of the zinc particles is large enough that they cannot not get into the bloodstream. Nano particles are so small they can get into the bloodstream. This is also important for ingredients in toothpaste.
This is the zinc oxide powder I used in this spray.
Best Essential Oils To Use In Your Sunscreen Spray
Here are a few essential oil recommendations for your sunscreen spray.
Essential Oils Recommendations
- Lavender has many benefits for skin and is always one of my top choices for any diy skin care product.
- Myrrh is believed to have some natural spf in it so is a great choice, although there is no hard science to back this.
- Helichrysum is fantastic for skin and has regenerative properties.
- Peppermint is cooling and will feel fantastic in this spray when out in the sun on a hot day.
Essential Oils to Avoid In Your Sunscreen Spray
You’ll want to be sure to avoid essential oils that can cause photosensitivity. These are all citrus oils and blends that contain citrus in them.
Citrus Oils Are Photosensitive!
Do not add these oils to your sunscreen spray.
Step By Step Directions To Make Your Sunscreen Spray
First, add the avocado oil, carrot seed oil, and red raspberry seed oil to a small bowl and gently mix to combine.
Next, add your essential oils to the mixture. If you are not using oils, skip this step.
Next, add your non-nano zinc oxide and whisk to combine.
Finally, add in the aloe vera gel. Mix well. It will have small clumps.
The last step is to add to your spray bottle and shake until it is fully mixed in. You can use a small metal funnel to help you get it in the bottle.
How To Use Your Sunscreen Spray
Use your spray as you would any commercial sunscreen spray.
Spray on exposed skin liberally. Rub it in if needed. Reapply frequently, especially after going in the water or sweating.
Easy Sunscreen Spray DIY Recipe with Zinc
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup avocado oil
- ยผ cup pure aloe vera gel
- 2 tablespoons carrot seed oil
- 2 tablespoons red raspberry seed oil
- 10 drops essential oil myrrh, lavender, or peppermint
- 2 tablespoons non-nano zinc oxide
- Spray bottle
Instructions
- Add the avocado oil, carrot seed oil, and red raspberry seed oil all together.
- If you are using essential oils, add that in and stir to combine.
- Next, add in the non-nano zinc oxide and whisk until all combined.
- Finally, add in the aloe vera gel. Mix until it is all small clumps.
- Add to your spray bottle and shake until it is fully mixed in.
Notes
- Essential oils are optional!ย Myrrh has natural spf. Lavender and peppermint are also great choices.ย ย Do not use a citrus oil because those cause photosensitivity (i.e. your skin will be quick to sunburn).
- This should last for a few months. If you want to preserve it longer, add a preservative.
- You can also use an infused oil. I used lavender infused avocado oil.
- Fractionated coconut oil also works in replace of avocado oil.
