Supplies & Ingredients You’ll Need to Make Sunscreen
Coconut Oil – You’ll want one that is cold pressed, extra virgin and unrefined. This is the highest quality and most natural you can find. I use this coconut oil. You can use it in many other DIY projects as well as cooking recipes.
Carrier Oil – I recommend choosing a carrier oil that is naturally high in SPF. Raspberry, avocado, pomegranate, wheatgerm all are great choices.
Beeswax – I like these beeswax pellets. They are easy to measure. Any raw beeswax works.
Shea Butter – Raw Shea Butter, not the premade kind you use as lotion. This is the one I buy. I can be used in many other DIY Beauty recipes such as
Non Nano Zine Oxide
Zinc Oxide – I used this one. Be sure to use one that is non-nano.
Non-nano particles mean they can’t be absorbed into the blood stream.
Essential Oil – I recommend using carrot seed oil since it is naturally high in SPF.
If you don’t have carrot seed oil or prefer to use something different, some other good choices are:
- Lavender – great for skin
- Frankincense
Do not use a citrus essential oil since this can make your skin photo sensitive – meaning it will cause your skin to burn very quickly.
Container
You can use any container. I made some in 2 different types of glass containers. An 4 oz amber jar and a clear container.
How to make DIY Natural Sunscreen
First, you’ll need to melt your shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax together.
If you have a double boiler, you can use this, or improvise one. You can place a mason jar inside a pot filled with water and melt everything in the mason jar.
You could also use a glass bowl in the microwave. Microwave for 30 seconds at a time, and stir in between. I like to use a wooden craft stick for this because it makes cleanup a breeze.
Next, stir in your non nano zine oxide and mix thoroughly.
Then, Add your essential oils and stir thoroughly.
Once you are done, you should have something that looks similar to this:
The last step is to pour the mixture into your container and let it cool. As it cools, you’ll want to stir it occasionally to make sure the zinc is still mixed in evenly.
