Benefits of Tallow for Skin
Tallow is a form of rendered fat usually derived from beef. It has been used for centuries in skincare. It’s packed with nourishing properties that make it a natural and beneficial option for skin health. It’s especially great for dry skin.
Here are some of the main benefits:
- Deep Moisturization: Tallow contains essential fatty acids like oleic and palmitic acid that help lock in moisture, deeply hydrating and softening the skin.
- Rich in Vitamins: It’s naturally high in skin-healthy vitamins A, D, E, and K, which help improve skin elasticity, support cellular renewal, and protect against environmental damage.
- Similar to Skin Composition: Tallow closely mimics the composition of human skin, making it highly compatible and easily absorbed. This similarity allows it to nourish skin without clogging pores or causing irritation.
- Antioxidant Properties: The presence of vitamins like E and A gives tallow natural antioxidant effects, which can help reduce the signs of aging by fighting free radicals.
- Anti-inflammatory Effects: Tallow’s fatty acids have soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, which may alleviate conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and acne-prone skin.
- Promotes Skin Barrier Repair: The natural fats in tallow support the skinโs barrier function, helping to protect against moisture loss and environmental irritants.
- Long-lasting Hydration: Unlike water-based lotions, tallow remains on the skin longer, providing prolonged hydration without frequent reapplication.
- Non-comedogenic: Because it is easily absorbed, tallow generally does not clog pores, making it suitable for many skin types, including those prone to breakouts.
- Supports Collagen Production: Vitamins in tallow aid in collagen production, helping to maintain skin firmness and elasticity over time.
- Chemical-Free: Unlike many commercial moisturizers, tallow is free of artificial fragrances, preservatives, and fillers, reducing the risk of irritation from synthetic ingredients.
Ingredients and Supplies You’ll Need to make this Whipped Tallow Balm
This is a very simple balm and only requires 3 ingredients!
You’ll need the following 3 ingredients:
Grass Fed Tallow – be sure to get the most natural tallow you can find since this is going on your skin. I used this one that is from grass fed beef.
Carrier Oil – I used Jojoba Oil. You can use whatever carrier oil you like. Examples: Avocado oil, argan oil, liquid (fractionated) coconut oil, etc.
Essential Oil – I used a combination of Lavender and a few drops of Frankincense essential oil since this combination is fantastic for skin.
Most people aren’t aware of just how beneficial Lavender oil is for our skin! I highly recommend it in this balm because it is so great for our skin. However, you can add any essential oil you like.
Other options I think would be great include:
- lemon
- orange
- lavender
- peppermint
- tea tree
Be sure you are using a pure essential oil and not a fragrance oil. Fragrance oil can damage your skin and contains all kinds of harmful synthetic ingredients.
Citrus Essential Oils & Sun Tip
If you choose to use a citrus oil, you’ll want to avoid the sun immediately after using because it can make your skin photosensitive. Your skin will sunburn more quickly than normal!
Supplies You’ll Need
You’ll need a heat safe glass jar such as a mason jar or glass measuring cup, and a shallow pot that is big enough to put the glass jar in and allows the water to come up the sides of the glass jar. This makes a double boiler. If you have a double boiler that you prefer to use, that will work also.
The last piece of equipment you’ll need is either a hand mixer or blender. I used a blender, but a hand mixer should work just as well.
How to make Whipped Tallow Balm
The first step is to add the tallow to a glass jar and slowly heat the glass jar in a shallow pot of hot water until it is melted. Alternatively, use a double boiler to melt the tallow.
Next, add in the carrier oil, and pour into a bowl to let it cool until it has hardened.
Then, use either a blender or a hand mixer to blend the mixture until it is whipped and fluffy.
The last step is to stir in the essential oil.
Store your tallow balm in a glass jar and use it on dry skin as needed.

Ingredients
- ยฝ cup rendered tallow
- 2 TBL carrier oil Ex: Jojoba, Avocado, etc.

Instructions
- Add the tallow to the double boiler over a pot of simmering water. Slowly heat tallow until melted. Alternatively, use a glass mason jar in the pot of hot water instead of the double boiler. (The double boiler is much easier to use than the mason jar and is easier clean up.)

- Then whip with a blender or hand mixer until light and fluffly.
- Add in your essential oils. Use a total of 15 – 20 drops. Can combine oils, use all of the same oil, or skip altogether.

Came out great!
Love this so much!
Is there a vegan alternative to tallow that has similar benefits? I love the simplicity of the recipe but looking for plant-based.
You might want to try cocoa butter or shea butter. They’re great for skin and vegan!
