Ingredients and Supplies You’ll Need to Make Gingerbread Body Butter
Here’s everything you’ll need to make this Gingerbread body butter.
If you have made body butters in the past, you’ll likely have the main ingredients on hand already. And if you have never made body butter of any kind, you’ll be able to use these ingredients for other DIY skin care projects including these DIY Vanilla Bean Lotion Bars, Natural Sunscreen, Shaving cream, or this basic body butter recipe.
Ingredients you’ll need:
Raw Shea Butter – this is the one I use
Virgin, cold pressed Coconut Oil – my favorite is this one
Essential Oils – I made a gingerbread blend using Ginger, Cassia (could substitute with Cinnamon), Vanilla, and Clove. See the recipe below for the exact amounts of each oil.
DIY Gingerbread essential oil blend
- 4 drops Ginger
- 4 drops Cassia (or Cinnamon)
- 2 drop Clove
- 2 drop Vanilla
Don’t stress about getting the number of drops exactly right. It will still smell fantastic if you accidentally get an extra drop or two of any of the oils. Consider the number of drops a guide to go by and get it as close as you can. And if you don’t have all of the oils, just use what you do have. It will still smell great!
Gingerbread Spice – you can get this premade blend or make your own blend if you have the individual spices on hand.
Equipment you’ll need:
Either a stand mixer or a hand mixer and a bowl. Either will get the job done.
Either a double boiler or a microwave safe bowl. You can make your own double boiler by putting a glass mason jar in a pot of simmering water and adding your butters/oils to the mason jar.
How to make Gingerbread Whipped Body Butter
First, you need to melt the shea butter and coconut oil. Add to your double boiler or put in a microwave safe bowl and heat for 30 seconds at a time, stirring after.
Once the shea butter and coconut oils are melted, stir well to combine them.
Transfer the mixture to your mixer bowl, then pop it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes – 1 hour.
Once the mixture has cooled, remove from the refrigerator and mix on high for 5 minutes. Stopping to scrape the sides about every minute to ensure it is mixed evenly. Mix until you have a light, fluffy cream.
Congrats!! You just made body butter!! Now, you’ll add the essential oils and spices to give it the gingerbread scent.
Once you’ve added the spices and essential oil, mix on low speed to incorporate.
Then, add your body butter mixture to a cute glass jar. I like to use these with lids.
Store it in a cool, dry place. Homemade body butter typically several months when stored properly in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
Use as you would use lotion.
These made cute DIY gifts for the holidays!
