Supplies and Ingredients for your Oatmeal Body Butter
Before you get started, gather all your supplies and get everything ready. Here is what you’ll need:
You’ll need the following ingredients.
- Shea butter
- Cocoa Butter
- Coconut Oil
- Jojoba Oil or your favorite carrier oil
- Colloidal Oatmeal
- Your favorite essential oil
- a glass jar to store your body butter in (a mason jar works great!)
You’ll also need the following supplies:
- Double boiler or heat safe glass jar
- Hand mixer or stand mixer
I love this small double boiler for almost all of my diy skin care projects. It’s so handy because of the size and very easy to clean.
What is colloidal oatmeal?
Colloidal means it has already been ground up. It comes in the form of finely ground oats that are used in skincare products for their soothing and moisturizing properties.
I recommend using Organic if possible. This is the organic colloidal oatmeal I have used:
- Pure and Natural Ingredients: Made from high-quality, 100% natural colloidal oatmeal. Free from additives, fragrances, and artificial preservatives.
Keep in mind these ingredients can be used for many other DIY projects. For example:

Essential Oil Choices For Your Oatmeal Body Butter
Adding essential oils to your homemade body butter can offer several benefits.
First – you can customize the scent to whatever you like! Make your own blend and have a signature scent.
You could choose something energizing like peppermint, and/or citruses for in the mornings to help get you going.
Or you could choose something more relaxing for bedtime like Lavender, or Chamomile.
You could use a blend of oils specific for the season like my Gingerbread body butter or make a pumpkin spice blend for the fall.
The other benefit of adding essential oils is they can offer benefits for you skin. Lavender, for example is great for skin irritation, redness, and minor imperfections. Frankincense can offer anti-aging benefits as well as anti inflammatory benefits.
There’s no right or wrong choice here. Use whatever you like.
Do be careful not to go out in the sun for a few hours if you use a citrus essential oil in your body butter. Citrus oils are photo-sensitive meaning they make your skin sun burn easily.
