What is a Conditioner Bar?
A conditioner bar is a solid form of hair conditioner that is used to moisturize and soften the hair. It is similar to a soap bar or a shampoo bar but contains hair conditioning ingredients instead.

Why Use a DIY Conditioner Bar?
To reduce plastic waste and environmental impact, many are turning to DIY conditioner bars as a sustainable alternative. These bars are made with natural ingredients and packaged in minimal or zero plastic, making them an eco-friendly choice.
By opting for DIY conditioner bars, you can not only take a step towards reducing your carbon footprint but also have the freedom to customize the ingredients and scents to suit your specific hair care needs.
With these bars, you can enjoy the benefits of a conditioner while actively contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.
Benefits of Using a Conditioner Bar
Using a conditioner bar offers several benefits for your hair care routine.
- Reduces plastic waste as it eliminates the need for plastic bottles.
- Conditioner bars are travel-friendly and convenient to carry around. Additionally, they tend to last longer than traditional liquid conditioners, making them a cost-effective choice.
- Conditioner bars contain natural and nourishing ingredients that can enhance the health and appearance of your hair.
Gather Your Ingredients and Tools

Ingredients for DIY Conditioner Bar
You’ll need the following ingredients to make shampoo bars:
- ½ cup cocoa butter
- ¼ cup coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon emulsifying wax
- 15 to 20 drops essential oil (optional) I recommend Rosemary, Ylang Ylang, or Tea Tree. These are all great choices for healthy hair and scalp.
Necessary Tools and Equipment
You’ll need a heat safe glass container such as a Pyrex style measuring cup, mason jar or similar. You probably already have one in your kitchen.
You’ll also need a silicone soap mold. I used this basic rectangle shape soap mold that I already had on hand for making soap bars. Feel free to use whatever shape you like. The shape isn’t important so it’s really up to what you have on hand or feel free to purchase one you like.
Essential Oils for Your Homemade Conditioner Bar
Essential oils are optional. Rosemary, lavender, and tea tree oil are all great for hair care.
If you are looking for hair growth, I recommend Rosemary.
Tea tree oil has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help with scalp conditions like dandruff and itchiness. It may also promote hair growth and reduce hair loss.
Ylang ylang essential oil is a lovely floral oil and can promote healthy hair growth and reduce hair breakage.
Step-by-Step DIY Conditioner Bar Instructions
First, add the cocoa butter, coconut oil, and emulsifying wax into a heat safe glass container. Slowly melt it on a double broiler or in the microwave, stirring in between.

Once completely melted, have it cool down a bit, then add in your essential oils.

Then, pour into your mold. Let sit to harden. This may take around 48 hours or longer until they are fully hard.

Once your bars have hardened completely, pop them out of the mold and they are ready to use!

To Use: Rub between your fingers or palms until it melts on your hands. Then rub through your hair. Wait a few minutes and then rinse off. For best results, keep bar as dry as possible in between uses.

Have you tried using this recipe with beeswax instead of emulsifying wax?
Hi Rachel – I have not tried it. My understanding is that beeswax doesn’t work as an emulsifier. If you try it, let me know how it works!!
These conditioner bars look amazing!
This was easy to make and turned out great. Thanks!
used Rosemary oil and it smells so good.
I made these and the shampoo bars to take on a trip and they came out great.
Love it!
Worked perfectly for me!
I followed the instructions exactly but the bars did not set!
I’m sorry it didn’t set for you. when that happens, it usually means the oil content is too high. You could try it again and use less coconut oil and you’ll probably have better results. I don’t know the reasons why it can happen for some and not others . perhaps you have a higher humidity level or different temperature in your area.
