Benefits of Charcoal for the teeth
Activated Charcoal has many benefits when used as a toothpaste:
- It can help whiten teeth and remove stains
- Remove stains
- Freshen breath
It is known for its adsorption properties, which allow it to attract and bind to substances on the surface of the teeth, including plaque and staining compounds. This can help remove surface stains and discoloration, resulting in a brighter smile.
Activated charcoal can help absorb odors and bacteria that contribute to bad breath, providing a fresh and clean feeling in the mouth.
Its gentle abrasive nature also aids in the removal of plaque and tartar buildup, promoting better oral hygiene.
Ingredients and Supplies You’ll Need To Make Natural Charcoal Toothpaste
You’ll need to grab a few ingredients to make this natural toothpaste.
Keep in mind you will be able to make several batches of this toothpaste with these items since you’re only using a small amount per batch. So these will go a loooong ways towards lots of toothpaste.
Activated Charcoal – this is what I used
Calcium Carbonate Powder – I used this one
Baking Soda – whatever you have in your kitchen will work! This is my favorite brand.
Coconut Oil – The best kind to use is cold pressed, unrefined, organic. This is my favorite coconut oil brand.
You may be asking yourself: Is baking soda the same thing as calcium carbonate powder?
The short answer is: No – they are different.
Here’s the long answer:
Calcium carbonate powder and baking soda are both white powders commonly used in various household and industrial applications, but they differ significantly in composition and uses.
Calcium carbonate is a natural mineral found in rocks, shells, and eggs and is primarily used as a calcium supplement, in antacids, and as a neutralizing agent in gardening. It’s a non-reactive substance unless mixed with acid, where it produces carbon dioxide slowly.
Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is chemically differentโitโs a fast-acting leavening agent in baking and an effective cleaner due to its ability to react quickly with acids, releasing carbon dioxide.
So, their applications are different due to these unique chemical properties.
Step by Step Directions for making natural charcoal toothpaste
The first step is to mix your dry ingredients together in a bowl. Add the charcoal powder, baking soda, and calcium carbonate to a bowl and stir with a spoon to mix.
If you like, you can add a small amount of xylitol to the dry ingredients for some extra sweetness. Xylitol has added benefits for teeth. You can leave this out if you want. Totally optional.
Next, combine the coconut oil with your choice of essential oil. I recommend Peppermint or Spearmint. Tea tree is another good option. Or you can choose to leave out the essential oil.
Add the coconut oil to the dry ingredients and mix well.
That’s it! Store your natural toothpaste in a small jar like a glass mason jar.
To use, put a small amount on your toothbrush and use just as you would any other toothpaste.
