Why Use Hibiscus? It’s packed with benefits for your skin
Here are just a few of the powerhouse benefits of hibiscus when you use it on your skin:
- Rich in Antioxidants: Hibiscus is packed with antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, which help to fight free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and preventing premature aging.
- Natural Exfoliant: The natural acids in hibiscus, such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), gently exfoliate the skin, removing dead cells and promoting a brighter, smoother complexion.
- Anti-Aging Properties: Hibiscus is known for its ability to increase skin elasticity, often referred to as the “botox plant” because it helps firm and lift the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Hydrating: The mucilage content in hibiscus provides intense hydration, helping to maintain moisture levels in the skin and leaving it soft and supple.
- Even Skin Tone: Hibiscus contains organic acids, like citric and malic acid, that help to even out skin tone and reduce hyperpigmentation, giving the skin a more uniform appearance.
- Anti-Inflammatory: Hibiscus has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe irritated skin, making it ideal for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin.
- Promotes Collagen Production: The high vitamin C content in hibiscus supports collagen production, which is essential for maintaining the skin’s firmness and elasticity.
- Natural Cleanser: Hibiscus helps to cleanse the skin by breaking down and removing impurities, making it a great ingredient for detoxifying and refreshing the skin.
Supplies & Ingredients for making a Hibiscus Scrub
Here’s what you’ll need to make this hibiscus scrub.
You’ll need something to grind up your oats and rose hips. A coffee bean grinder works great, or a blender or food processor will also get the job done.
You’ll need the following ingredients:
Hibiscus Powder – this is the one I used
Rose Hips – I used these.
Organic Oats – Any oats will work, however I highly recommend using organic if possible since many oats have been heavily sprayed and shown to have glyphosate and other pesticide residue.
Pink Kaolin Clay can work wonders for your skin. Here are some of the benefits:
- Soften Skin: The gentle nature of pink kaolin clay helps to soften the skin, leaving it feeling smooth and refreshed after use.
- Gentle Exfoliation: Pink kaolin clay provides mild exfoliation, helping to remove dead skin cells and reveal a smoother, more radiant complexion without irritating the skin.
- Detoxifies: This clay is excellent at drawing out impurities and toxins from the skin, making it effective for deep cleansing and reducing the appearance of pores.
- Soothes & Calms: Pink kaolin clay has natural soothing properties, making it ideal for calming irritated or sensitive skin, and reducing redness or inflammation.
- Balances Oil Production: While being gentle, pink kaolin clay helps to absorb excess oil from the skin, making it particularly beneficial for those with oily or combination skin types, without stripping the skin of its natural moisture.
- Enhances Skin Tone: Regular use of pink kaolin clay can help improve skin tone and texture, leading to a more even, glowing complexion.
- Improves Circulation: When applied as a mask, pink kaolin clay can stimulate blood circulation to the skin, promoting a healthy, vibrant appearance.
- Mineral-Rich Nourishment: Pink kaolin clay is rich in natural minerals like silica, which helps to nourish and strengthen the skin, supporting its overall health and vitality.
Directions and Steps for how to make Hibiscus Scrub
First, use a coffee grinder, food processor or blender to grind your oats into a very fine powder.
Then, do the same with the rose hips.
You should end up with 4 powders that looks something like this:
Next, mix all the powders together and store in a container. A small mason jar works great! Or you can use something like this 4 oz. plastic container.
That’s it!
To use your hibiscus scrub, add a small amount of water to about a tablespoon of the powder to form a paste. You can do this right in the palm of your hand, or use a small bowl if it’s easier. Add more or less water and/or powder to get the consistency you want.
Once you have your desired consistency, rub it gently on your face or body for approximately 2 minutes. Rinse it off when done.
I recommend using it two times a week.
