What is a shower steamer and how is it different than a bath bomb?
If you are a shower person, you’ll love shower steamers. They are similar to bath steamers, but designed to work quickly in the shower. Simply toss one or two on the floor of the shower and they dissolve while you are in the shower.
When they come into contact with the water of the shower, the shower bomb dissolves and releases the scent of the essential oils which can be energizing, calming, open your sinuses, or simply just smell fantastic! It depends on the essential oils used in the shower bomb.
Supplies and Ingredients needed to make candy cane shower steamers
You’ll need the following ingredients to make these candy cane shower steamers:
- Unscented Epsom Salt
- Baking Soda
- Water
- Peppermint Essential Oil
- Red Food Coloring (optional)
You may also find the following supplies helpful, but they aren’t required. You can easily make your shower steamers without them.
I used a cookie scoop to get the round shape. You could easily shape these with your hands if you don’t have a cookie scoop.
I also used some parchment paper on a cookie tray to allow the steamers to dry. I like to use this brand of parchment to avoid bleach and other toxins in the parchment paper. This particular brand is clean and free of toxins.
Step by Step Directions for How to Make Your Candy Cane Shower Steamers
To make your Candy Cane Shower Steamers, follow these easy steps:
First, whisk together 1/2 of the Epsom salt and baking soda.
Then, add the peppermint essential oil and drizzle in the water until you get the consistency of wet sand. You may not end up using all of the water. That’s ok. It’s better to not use it all than to use too much.
Next, if using the food coloring, add that to the remaining Epsom salt and fold into the mixture. I didn’t mix it all the way together to give it a specific look. Up to you how you prefer yours to look.
You can definitely not add the food coloring if you prefer. It won’t affect the shower steamers other than the look. You’ll have white shower steamers, not the pinkish/redish color you see in the photos.
The last step is to use the cookie scoop (or your hands) to drop spoonfuls onto parchment paper or a cookie tray.
In the photo, you can see that I pressed some crushed cany canes onto the top of each shower bomb. Totally optional! The candy cane looks really cute if you are giving these as a gift! Highly recommend.
If you are going to add crushed candy cane, do it now before they dry. Gently press a few pieces onto the top of the shower bomb.
Once you’ve made your shower steamers, let them dry for about 12 hours.
Once the shower steamers are dry, they are ready to use!
To use your shower steamer, throw 1 or 2 on the floor of the shower while you are in it. The warm water and steam will melt the shower and form a vapor.
The peppermint will open up your sinuses for clearer breathing and energize you so you’re ready for the day!
These Candy Cane Shower Steamers make impressive gifts, and kids love to make them. Do this project together for a fun afternoon craft.
