DIY Facial Serum

This DIY Facial Serum recipe will show you how to make your own Facial Serum that will give you beautiful, glowing skin.

DIY Facial serum is an easy and cost effective way to treat your skin to nourishing essential oils.

There are only 2 steps to make this homemade facial serum.  Super simple.   And you're going to save a ton of money!

I cringe at the though of paying upwards of $50 - $100 for a high quality facial serum.

This diy facial serum comes in at a price that doesn't give me the shakes.

The essential oils you will be adding to your diy facial serum will cost only a few cents per drop.  Yes, there are a few oils that cost a bit more than others, but what's nice is you can choose which essential oils you are using.  This makes it easy to use oils that fit your budget.

The carrier oil is generally inexpensive as well, and can be used for other DIY projects.  All together, this serum will likely come in at under $10.

Another benefit is that I know exactly what I am putting on my skin.  There are no unnecessary fillers, synthetic ingredients, or preservatives that are not good for us.

There are many choices when it comes to the essential oils to use in your diy facial serum.  You can customize this serum to your specific needs.

You may need acne fighting essential oils, or perhaps you need anti-aging oils, or like me, maybe you need hydration.    I have extremely dry skin, and I live in the desert with about 8% humidity, so I really need to give my skin extra hydration.  And let's be honest.  At my age, I need all the wrinkle fighting help I can get.  So I chose some specific oils to help with those needs.

Go with what your skin needs.  I've got some more specific recommendations for different skin types below.

What You'll Need for your DIY Facial Serum

You only need 3 items to make this Serum.  Keep scrolling to read about each or click to jump straight to that section.

  1. Dropper Bottle
  2. Carrier Oil
  3. Essential Oils

Just want the directions?

Dropper Bottles

First, you'll need a 2 oz dropper bottle.  These are cheap and easy to grab from Amazon. You can go basic, or fancy.  Whatever your taste.

These are some I have bought in the past and love.

doTERRA FRactionated coconut oil is a high quality carrier oil for use with essential oil application

Carrier Oil

You'll need a good quality carrier oil for your DIY facial serum.  Since this is going to be used on your face, you don't want to skimp and use a cheap carrier oil.

You'll want to get the best carrier oil you can.  It's also important to choose the right carrier oil for your skin type.

While many people automatically reach for the Fractionated Coconut Oil in their essential oil DIY projects, I do not recommend FCO (Fractionated Coconut Oil) for use in this facial serum because it can clog pores.

Jojoba Oil is a good all around carrier oil for the face.  It is closest to the natural oil our skin produces, and will work well for dry skin, normal skin, or combination skin.

You may decide you want to choose something even more hydrating for dry skin such as Sweet Almond Oil or Sesame Oil.

If you have acne prone skin, you may want to choose Grape Seed, Argan, or Sunflower oil.

Check out this blog post on carrier oils for more help on choosing one for your skin type.

It is totally fine, and beneficial even, to combine carrier oils!  Experiment and find out what your skin loves the most.  Be sure to avoid nut based oils if you have a nut allergy.

make your own anti aging diy facial serum with doterra essential oils of geranium, blue tansy, copaiba, and frankincense

Essential Oils

I recommend using Frankincense, Blue Tansy, Copaiba, and Geranium as a good starter serum if you've never made this before.

You can use as few as 1 or 2 essential oils in this, or as many as you like.   Use what you have.  There is no need to run out and buy a bunch of essential oils in order to make this.

You can work on adding more oils to your collection for this serum in the future.

When I make this serum for myself, I about 6 different essential oils to my serum.  I reach for oils that I have used in the past and my skin liked.

Here are the essential oils I chose to use:
  • Frankincense ( I consider this one a must in this recipe) - It has been used since the time of ancient Egyptians and Biblical times.  They knew even thousands of years ago the amazing benefits of Frankincense.  It can help with fine lines and wrinkles, reduction of the appearance of scars, and give an overall radiant and youthful glow.
  • Lavender is one of the most popular essential oils of all time and with good reason.  It has incredible benefits for the skin.  It can help reduce redness, blotchy patches and reduce acne.  It has anti-inflammatory properties that help your skin heal from irritations, sun burn, insect bites, or bacteria.  It can also help detoxify the skin, heal, soothe, and prevent wrinkles.  It's a superstar!
  •  Blue Tansy -  This essential oil is popular in many commercial beauty creams, lotions, and serums because it is full of calming, soothing benefits for our skin.  It's packed with anti oxidants and can calm inflammation and reduce redness, and can benefit many skin types including dry, irritated skin and acne.
  • Helichrysum  - This is a beautiful healing oil that is great for inflammation, cell regeneration, and can help diminish scars.  It is called “The Everlasting Flower” because of its ant-aging rejuvenating benefits for the skin and ability to improve the complexion.
  • Yarrow | Pom - This is so wonderful for skin all on it's own that many people will slather this all over their face to reap the benefits.  It has a beautiful blue tint to it that may turn the skin a bit blue at first, but will go away in a few minutes.  Smurfette anyone?
More EO Choices

There are many other skin nourishing essential oils you could choose to use in your serum.

Geranium is FANTASTIC for the skin.  If you love the smell, I definitely recommend adding it.

  • Geranium - Geranium has fantastic benefits for the skin.  It can help with acne breakouts, skin irritations, and skin infections.  I didn't add it because, personally, I am not a fan of the smell.  But if you love the smell, I highly recommend adding this one.
  • Melaleuca (Tea Tree) - especially good for acne prone or oily skin.  Duchess Meghan Markle keeps this one on hand to help her skin anytime she has small breakouts or mosquito bites. Check out Melaleuca on her list of  beauty must haves in Allure Magazine. It is naturally cleansing and purifying and will help fight acne causing bacteria.
  • Copaiba -  Widely used in cosmetic products including soaps, creams, lotions, and perfumes.  It is high in beta-caryophyllene which has been studied for its affects on skin. Perfect for any facial serum.
  • Roman Chamomile - wonderfully moisturizing for great for dry skin.
  • Wild Orange - packed with vitamin C and anti-oxidants which is wonderful for skin

Extras that your skin will love

You can also add a few extras that your skin will thank you for.  These aren't necessary but will really add some extra nourishment that you will notice.

Vitamin E oil - a natural anti-oxidant to help protect your skin from free radical damage.  Helps nourish and Hydrate.  I added a few drops to my serum to help with hydration for my dry skin.

Rosehip Oil - Can help smooth skin and appearance of scars by tightening the skin, keeps is hydrated, and is rich in omegas to help with anti-aging.  Hellooo? Who doesn't need that, am I right?

Be sure to invest in organic, pure versions that are high quality and not synthetic.

Rose Quartz Facial Roller -  These are really beneficial when used a few times a week with your DIY Facial Serium.  The Rose Quartz crystal has  a unique crystalline lattice that drives healing ions deep into your cells to soothe inflammation, reduce wrinkles, and flush lymphatic waste and puffiness.

Directions for your DIY Facial Serum

To make your serum, there are two steps.

  1. First, add your essential oils to your container.  I recommend adding about 15 - 20 drops of essential oil in a 2 oz. bottle.
  2. Optional - add a few drops each of Vitamin E and / or Rosehip Oil if you are choosing to use either of these.  If not, you can move on to the next step.
  3. Second, once you have added your essential oils, top off the bottle with your carrier oil(s).   Be sure to leave enough room in the bottle to add your dropper.  You don't want to overflow and lose your precious oils.    Screw the dropper on tightly and give the bottle a few gentle shakes to mix everything together thoroughly.

Using your DIY Facial Serum

Once you have your DIY facial serum made, you will want to apply it after washing your face, and before applying your moisturizer.   I always like to give it a gentle shake before using to make sure everything is mixed.  Add a few drops of the facial serum to your clean hands and smooth gently over your face and neck.  Take care not to rub too hard as this is not good for your skin.

  1. Wash your face with your all natural cleanser of choice ( I use the Verage facial cleanser from doTERRA)
  2. Apply your DIY Facial serum by gently smoothing or patting it  on  your face.  Be sure to do this right away after washing your face while it is still damp.  This will lock the moisture into your skin.
  3. Gently apply your moisturizer once the Serum has had time to soak in,.  (I am in love with the doTERRA Hydrating Cream.)

Have fun making your own DIY facial serum, and experiment to see what works best for your skin.  You may find that certain essential oils work better than others.

I would love to hear how you made your own serum and what works for you!  Leave a comment on this post and let me know!  Feel free to ask any questions you have and I'm happy to help.

Choose your essential oils carefully - most are not what they seem.
never buy doterra essential oils on amazon because of tampering
Why doTERRA and not something from Amazon or Walmart?

Did you know that most essential oils at drugstores are synthetic fragrance only?  And did you know that most oils on Amazon, even doTERRA, are adulterated (tampered with and diluted with coconut oil), and can't be trusted?

I choose to use doTERRA essential oils.  They are the purest, highest quality and only brand I trust to use for my family.  Find out Why I LOVE doTERRA here.  It's not only just for their fabulous essential oils. It's for their sustainability and the way they work hand in hand with the farmers and communities who grow the plants.

The cheapest way to get doTERRA is with a starter kit which start at only $55.  Check out the details here or fill in your information in this quick form and I'll email them to you.
